Capella Kyoto Suite Bedroom

Capella Hotels opens its first Japan property in Kyoto’s geisha district

Capella makes its Japan debut in Miyagawa-cho, Kyoto's historic kagai, with 89 rooms designed by Kengo Kuma

Capella Hotels and Resorts makes its Japan debut with Capella Kyoto, having opened on 22 March 2026 in Miyagawa-cho, one of Kyoto’s five historic geisha districts. The 89-room property sits steps from the 800-year-old Kenninji temple and the Kamo River, timed to coincide with the city’s cherry blossom season.

Architecture rooted in tradition

Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates and Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, the four-storey hotel reimagines the traditional machiya townhouse, drawing on Kyoto’s characteristic sequence of narrow alleys, hidden gardens, and interior thresholds. The property forms part of a three-part development on Shinmichi Street, alongside the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre and a new community centre. Built on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School, the project carries forward a legacy of learning, culture, and community in the neighbourhood.

The Kaburenjo has served for generations as the private training ground of Kyoto’s geiko and maiko. Now restored, it grants Capella Kyoto guests access to performances, offering a rare window into one of the city’s most closely guarded traditions.

Accommodations at Capella Kyoto range from Deluxe City Rooms to the 206-sqm top-floor Capella Suite, which commands the full sweep of the Higashiyama skyline. From both the bedroom and the lounge, guests look out over the pagodas and rooftops of the district, with the five-tiered silhouette of Yasaka Pagoda visible against the mountain ridge. The suite’s elevation above Miyagawa-cho also offers one of Gion’s more elusive sights: geiko and maiko making their way through the laneway below to the ochaya where they are engaged for the evening.

Premier Theatre Rooms are named for their outlook over the Kaburenjo, while the two Gion Suites face Kenninji temple directly. For those seeking a more immersive wellness experience, six Onsen Suites feature private hot spring baths.

A Michelin-pedigreed dining line-up

Capella Kyoto SoNoMa Kyle & Katina

The signature restaurant at Capella Kyoto is SoNoMa by SingleThread, created in partnership with SingleThread, the Three Michelin-starred restaurant in Sonoma, California, founded by Kyle and Katina Connaughton. Helmed by chef Keita Tominaga, the 12-seat counter and 20-seat lounge bar takes the form of a traditional ochaya teahouse, drawing on seasonal produce from Kyoto’s Kansai region and California’s Dry Creek Valley.

Late-night kappo restaurant Yoi, the all-day French brasserie Lanterne, and SingleThread Entremets, a dedicated patisserie programme led by executive pastry chef Emma Horowitz, complete the culinary offering.

Wellness and cultural programming

Auriga Spa anchors the hotel’s wellbeing facilities with three private onsen rooms, wet and dry saunas, and four treatment rooms. Inspired by lunar cycles and holistic rituals, the spa’s signature treatments draw on both Japanese tradition and contemporary wellness practices, offering guests a grounded counterpoint to the cultural intensity of the city beyond.

Cultural programming through Capella Curates offers access to some of Kyoto’s most closely held traditions, many of which are rarely, if ever, open to visitors. Highlights include front-row seats at the restored Kaburenjo Theatre, a private ochaya encounter with a maiko in a teahouse that remains by-invitation only, a visit to a 150-year-old sandal atelier where bespoke pairs are made by hand in the manner of old Gion, and a kintsugi workshop led by an urushi lacquerware master.

Capella Kyoto opened on 22 March 2026 with a ‘Whispers of Gion’ launch package, which includes breakfast for two at Lanterne, a hotel credit, and a handcrafted gift from a rotating collection of works by Kyoto artisans. Rates start from JPY 394,200 for two guests, inclusive of taxes and service charges.
