Newmark Hotels & Reserves has announced the opening of Toro River Lodges on 1 December, bringing a refined safari experience to the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve in Limpopo. Following a detailed refurbishment and interior redesign, the lodge offers guests an authentic Big Five escape along the banks of the Makhutswi River.
The property sits beneath ancient jackalberry, wild fig and marula trees, blending contemporary elegance with the raw beauty of the lowveld. Five luxurious suites, comprising three river suites and two luxury suites, each feature a private deck overlooking the river. Interiors balance warmth and authenticity, creating a relaxed environment for guests to unwind between safari experiences. Toro River Lodges provides twice-daily game drives and guided safari walks, with opportunities to encounter lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo across the 26,000-hectare conservancy.
Big Five safari experiences at Toro River Lodges

The Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve is recognised as a pioneer in ecotourism and a registered protected area west of Kruger National Park. Guests can expect immersive wildlife encounters through morning and evening game drives led by experienced guides. Guided safari walks offer a different perspective, allowing visitors to explore the bush on foot and gain insight into the region’s smaller ecosystems and animal tracks.
The lodge’s location along the Makhutswi River provides a serene backdrop for wildlife viewing, with frequent visits from animals coming to drink at the water’s edge. The conservancy’s long-term conservation vision ensures that guest experiences contribute directly to the preservation of wildlife and wilderness across the region.
Dining and relaxation

Dining at Toro River Lodges draws inspiration from African traditions and locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast is served beneath the trees, whilst dinner takes place either in the boma or on the pool deck, depending on the evening’s atmosphere. Menus reflect the surrounding landscape, offering guests a connection to the region through carefully prepared dishes.
Between safari activities, guests can relax on their private decks, enjoy the lodge’s communal spaces or take a dip in the pool overlooking the river. The design encourages a sense of calm and immersion in nature, allowing the sounds and rhythms of the bush to take centre stage.
Newmark’s safari hospitality expands

The opening of Toro River Lodges highlights Newmark Hotels & Reserves’ ongoing commitment to authentic, experience-led hospitality across Africa. “Toro River encapsulates the raw beauty and freedom of the bush whilst offering the warmth, comfort and sophistication our guests have come to expect,” says Neil Markovitz, founder and CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves.
