Singita Ebony safari lodge in South Africa

Singita Ebony reimagines its safari lodge with a striking redesign

How Singita's original lodge brings guests closer to nature with its sophisticated new look

Singita Ebony safari lodge, the original jewel in the Singita brand’s celebrated collection, has undergone a transformation that further elevates its reputation as one of Africa’s most iconic lodges. Positioned on a sweeping bend of the Sand River in South Africa’s Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, the redesign offers a closer connection to nature without compromising on comfort or elegance.

The extensive renovation, completed in May 2024 by Cape Town designers Cécile and Boyd, has reimagined the lodge while staying true to its heritage. Expansive indoor–outdoor living areas now open directly onto the riverbed, while tiered platforms cascade towards the water, ensuring uninterrupted views of the surrounding wilderness. The result is a design that blurs the line between lodge and landscape.

Suites that bring the outside in

The most dramatic change is within the 12 guest suites. Solid walls have been replaced by glass and canvas panels, allowing natural light to flood the interiors and creating an effortless flow between private spaces and the bush beyond. Each suite is a blend of tradition and innovation, featuring adobe-style fireplaces and textured walls alongside Cape Dutch chandeliers, wicker lampshades, and vintage chests from the Bailes private collection.

The design palette moves away from bold animal prints to softer tones of indigo, écru, ochre, and chocolate, creating interiors that feel refined yet timeless. Every suite includes a heated plunge pool, four-poster super king bed, and freestanding claw-foot tub, with patios overlooking the river for uninterrupted wildlife viewing. The use of reclaimed wood and antique pieces adds layers of authenticity and character throughout.

Unparalleled wildlife encounters

The Sabi Sand Nature Reserve is one of South Africa’s most sought-after safari destinations, renowned for its density of big cats, particularly leopards. Guests at Singita Ebony safari lodge enjoy exclusive access to 45,000 acres of private wilderness, where experienced guides and trackers offer highly personalised game drives. Many safaris are led by veteran guide Piet Marimane, with more than three decades of expertise, alongside his renowned tracking partner Martin Lubisi.

This deep knowledge of the terrain allows for extraordinary wildlife encounters, from close-up leopard sightings to observing wild dogs, rhinos, and lions within the same drive. Conservation efforts remain central to the experience, with anti-poaching patrols, including a canine unit, working tirelessly to protect the reserve’s rhino population.

Dining with a sense of place

Dining at the lodge reflects Singita’s philosophy of combining refined cuisine with regional character. An open kitchen allows guests to watch as the team, including graduates from Singita’s community culinary school, prepares each meal with precision. Under the guidance of chef Lerato Molaudi, the menus focus on lighter dishes that highlight local ingredients, such as curried lentil soup or slow-cooked springbok shank.

The wine cellar, curated by sommelier Isabel Dos Santos, is a highlight in itself. It features rare South African vintages, many of which are available exclusively at Singita properties, ensuring the pairing of fine cuisine with exceptional wines.

Conservation and community at the heart

Singita’s mission extends far beyond hospitality. Through its partnership with the Singita Lowveld Trust, the lodge supports initiatives that safeguard biodiversity while creating opportunities for local communities. Projects include leopard conservation programmes, early childhood education at local pre-schools, and training through the culinary school that equips young people with valuable career skills.

This commitment to conservation and community development underscores the brand’s ethos of protecting Africa’s wilderness for future generations while ensuring nearby communities benefit from sustainable tourism.
