The Chancery Rosewood opens in London’s historic Grosvenor Square

A diplomatic legacy reimagined for modern luxury

London’s hospitality landscape gains a remarkable new addition as The Chancery Rosewood has officially opened in the heart of Grosvenor Square. The luxury hotel occupies the former US Embassy building, a Grade II-listed modernist structure originally designed by Eero Saarinen.

After nearly a decade of meticulous planning and transformation, this diplomatic landmark has been reimagined as one of the capital’s most exclusive destinations. The project represents one of the most ambitious adaptive reuse developments in recent London history, transforming a symbol of Cold War diplomacy into a symbol of contemporary luxury hospitality.

From embassy to elegance

The transformation of this iconic building represents one of London’s most ambitious hotel developments in recent years. Sir David Chipperfield, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, led the conservation project alongside David Chipperfield Architects. Their approach preserved Saarinen’s distinctive diagrid ceiling and the building’s emblematic eagle sculpture whilst completely reconstructing the interiors.

The design philosophy centred on reconnecting the structure with Grosvenor Square’s public realm, removing the defensive barriers that had defined its embassy years. Chipperfield’s team added a sixth storey plus two setback golden rooftop levels, drawing inspiration from Saarinen’s own unrealised sketches for the original building.

Lavish interiors by Joseph Dirand

French designer Joseph Dirand created the hotel’s interior aesthetic, utilising rare materials throughout The Chancery Rosewood. The design incorporates the world’s last remaining slabs of green Indian marble, extensive walnut panelling, and stone quarried from the same source as the Pantheon. The new atrium echoes Saarinen’s faceted architectural forms through oversized O-rings rendered in dark wood.

The suites at The Chancery Rosewood expand vertically across multiple levels, offering increasing amenities as guests ascend. Higher-tier accommodations feature private kitchens, steam rooms, and bespoke lobbies designed for entourage-style stays. The two crown jewels are the 350-square-metre “Elizabeth” and “Charles” penthouses positioned on the rooftop levels.

Dining and social spaces

The Chancery Rosewood - Dining

Eight distinctive restaurants and bars populate The Chancery Rosewood, each designed to offer unique experiences. Serra provides contemporary dining, whilst Jacqueline serves as an elegant tea lounge. The Eagle Bar commands particular attention, positioned to offer views of the gilded embassy eagle that remains as a nod to the building’s diplomatic heritage.

The variety of dining venues ensures The Chancery Rosewood caters to different occasions and preferences throughout the day. These spaces transition seamlessly from business meetings to evening entertainment, reflecting the hotel’s position in one of London’s most prestigious business districts.

Wellness and leisure facilities

The Chancery Rosewood - Spa

The subterranean Asaya Spa anchors The Chancery Rosewood’s wellness offerings, featuring a 25-metre swimming pool and comprehensive treatment facilities. The spa includes a full-service salon and houses The Taktouk Clinic, which combines traditional spa treatments with dermatological services.

These facilities position The Chancery Rosewood among London’s premier wellness destinations, offering guests comprehensive relaxation and rejuvenation options without leaving the property.

The new face of refined travel

With room rates starting at approximately £1,400 per night and penthouses commanding over £20,000, The Chancery Rosewood positions itself at the pinnacle of London’s luxury accommodation market. The Chancery Rosewood’s arrival, following a rumoured £1 billion redevelopment, adds a new chapter to Mayfair’s story, blending the area’s history with a modern sense of style.
