Walk into MUU Bangkok and a curated house playlist greets you in the lobby. Open the door to your room and the same track is playing on the television, in perfect sync. It is a small touch, but one that immediately signals the hotel’s instinct for atmosphere and sets the tone for everything that follows.
The hotel occupies a prime position on Thong Lor, a Bangkok neighbourhood defined by independent restaurants, specialty coffee, concept bars and a particular kind of creative energy. MUU Bangkok suits the context well. Converted from a serviced apartment, it retains the spatial generosity of that format while building an identity that is clearly its own. The ambassador, as the hotel calls its door staff, takes over from arrival: on this visit, the room was ready a full hour before check-in, bags were handled and a welcome drink was waiting in the lobby.
Design that draws from its surroundings

Thai artists are present throughout the property, their work depicting scenes of local life in Thong Lor and beyond. A painting of a boat vendor selling mangoes on a floating market hangs in the suite; outside Otto restaurant, a photograph of the red bus that has operated exclusively in Thong Lor for decades sits as a quiet piece of local acknowledgement. The furniture and interiors are sourced primarily from Thai designers, and the lobby in particular with its herringbone parquet floors, double-height proportions and large-scale portraiture is a space worth arriving into.
A suite with room to breathe

The city view two bedroom suite with terrace covers 234 square metres and lives more like a well-considered apartment than a hotel room. The second bedroom houses an oversized bathtub behind a glass wall that looks through to the master bedroom, and the private terrace furnished with wicker seating and a striped parasol takes in an open panorama across the Bangkok skyline. A fully equipped kitchen with induction hob, coffee machine and refrigerator makes longer stays genuinely practical. The beds are by Hilker, a German manufacturer, and sleep here is consistently good.
Bars worth staying up for

The 11th floor rooftop pool looks out across Thong Lor in all directions, and the Ze Bar cocktail lounge operates alongside it, serving drinks and light bites against a zebra-print backdrop that manages to feel considered rather than heavy-handed. It is a good spot in the afternoon, particularly as the sky shifts towards the warm tones of the Bangkok evening.
Easier to miss, and better for it, is the 008 Bar: a hidden jazz venue tucked beside the pool terrace, with arched backlit bottle displays, leather armchairs and brass table lamps. The atmosphere is unhurried, the spirits list is long and a whisky sour ordered here was a strong way to end an evening. The 10th floor MUU Social Club, a co-working and events space with a la carte service, rounds out the offer for those who need somewhere to work or gather during the day.
Otto, and the case for a Thai chef cooking Italian

Otto Italian Restaurant serves breakfast as a buffet each morning, then transforms for evening a la carte dining. The kitchen is led by a Thai chef with a specialism in southern Italian cuisine, a direction shaped by the founder’s own deep affinity for Italian food and culture.
The carpaccio di manzo was the standout dish of the evening: carefully plated and well-balanced. The burrata, with berry tomatoes and basil olive oil, was clean and well-sourced, and the grilled salmon with truffle mashed potatoes was solid, the mashed potato deserving particular mention. The rigatoni karbone was the least memorable plate of the night, though the aperitivo that preceded dinner was handled well.
MUU Bangkok is directly connected to Eight Thonglor Shopping Mall, making the hotel a practical as well as pleasurable base in one of Bangkok’s most active neighbourhoods.
