For drivers, however, Monaco’s appeal lies in the challenge, as Nico Hülkenberg explains, “Monaco is probably the most iconic race weekend on the calendar, and one of the track. For me, it’s also a bit of a home race, having my family and friends around makes it truly special. The challenge here is unique; you need to find your rhythm from the very first lap, because there’s no room for error and no real opportunity to make up for mistakes. The midfield is extremely close, so nailing qualifying will be crucial. Monaco can surprise you but that’s exactly what makes it so special.”

The Style Stakes

Monaco Grand Prix style centres around Riviera dressing, think linen, glamorous two-pieces and floaty dresses suited to terrace soirées and yacht decks, from Bernadette striped numbers and easy FAITHFULL cotton dresses to polka dot Reformation styles, paired with elegant slingbacks from Anonymous Copenhagen, Aquazzura mules and more than a few mini Hermès Kelly bags. For men, lightweight suiting in neutral tones is the thing, paired with Loro Piana loafers, which are ideal given the amount of walking between marinas, terraces and hospitality venues.

Where to watch

For many guests, Monaco is best experienced from the water, with superyachts anchored throughout Port Hercule offering direct views of the circuit and harbour, and as such, it’s among the weekend’s most sought-after experiences.

The official Formula One Paddock Club hospitality is one of the hardest tickets to secure during Monaco GP. At most races, guests watch directly above the garages and pit lane, but in Monaco the experience takes over terraces, suites and yachts around Port Hercule, alongside pit lane walks and paddock access included within many hospitality packages.

There are other options too, as the Fairmont Hairpin is one of the circuit’s most famous viewing points, plus the grandstands around Casino Square and the harbourfront offer some of the clearest track views for general admission guests. Hotels including Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and Fairmont Monte Carlo also host hospitality terraces overlooking sections of the circuit, while several private apartments around Casino Square are rented exclusively for race viewing.

Where to dine, drink, and party

Café de Paris is one of Monte Carlo’s best people-watching spots thanks to its position beside Casino Square, while Pavyllon Monte-Carlo, Yannick Alléno’s refined waterfront restaurant, is among the Principality’s most sought-after tables. Le Louis XV Alain Ducasse at Hotel de Paris and Beefbar in the Fontvieille district also attract an international crowd, the latter is one of Nico’s favourite haunts. For late-night revelry, Sass Café is one of Monaco’s most fun party destinations, and a driver hotspot.

Getting there

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is the principal arrival point for Monaco Grand Prix weekend and is about 40 minutes from Monte Carlo by car. Helicopter transfers between Nice and Monaco are very popular, then there are guests who stay elsewhere on the Riviera and arrive by tender. Train services between Nice and Monaco continue throughout the weekend, although services are typically busier than usual during race days and evenings. It is worth noting that large parts of Monte Carlo close to traffic throughout the weekend, particularly around Casino Square, Port Hercule and the harbourfront circuit area.

For an iconic address, and we don’t use that word lightly, there’s Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo overlooking Casino Square, known for its Belle Époque interiors, wine cellars and Grand Prix terraces. Nearby, Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo offers an alternative, and still within walking distance of the circuit and harbour festivities. Le Méridien Beach Plaza is Monaco’s only hotel with a private beach and is popular with those wanting slightly more space away from Casino Square.

For those preferring to stay slightly outside Monaco, The Maybourne Riviera above Roquebrune-Cap Martin features gorgeous panoramic sea views within easy reach of Monte Carlo, while Le Mas Candille in Mougins offers a more relaxed Riviera base near Cannes.
